Cultural Currents: Preserving the Stories, Sounds, and Spirit of Red River
Cultural Currents is a multi-format exhibition and storytelling initiative collecting and disseminating over a century of the Red River Cultural District’s iconic heritage. The trailblazing project traces the district’s roots from the early German, Black, Latino, and Asian entrepreneurs who built the local businesses and social spaces to the seminal live music corridor of today.
Layered and overlapping experiences of business owners, musicians, artists, and fans are documented through signage, podcasts, zines, a self-guided tour, an interactive StoryMap, and a documentary film which engaged hundreds of people with memories of this neighborhood that is so essential to Austin’s cultural identity, yet vulnerable to erasure as development reshapes downtown.
Cultural Currents launched in May 2026, activated by immersive programming at venues like Chess Club, The 13th Floor, and Swan Dive, and in partnership with organizations like Preservation Austin, SXSW, C3 Presents, and Armadillo World Headquarters. The initiative both shares and collects a growing community archive, inviting residents and longtime visitors to contribute first-hand memories through a ”Share your Story” oral history activity that will inform future programming. Rooted in place-based storytelling and community-forward research, Cultural Currents shines a light on the people, venues, and creative energy that have defined Red River across generations and make it a place worth preserving.
The merit award was given for education, media and scholarship. Limbacher & Godfrey provided historical research and wrote the narrative underpinning for the project.
