Laurie Limbacher has joined an invited selection of architects from across the nation to juror for AIA Colorado’s 2016 Design Awards program. The winning projects will be recognized for their use of materials, aesthetics, use of space and design. Winners will be announced at the Awards Gala in Glenwood Springs, Colorado on August 26th.
Based on recommendations from Limbacher & Godfrey’s 2009 Barton Springs Master Plan, the City is planning for construction of a “ daylighting” project for Eliza Spring. Eliza Spring holds a unique position in both the cultural and the ecological history of the park. It is the home of the most robust population of the Barton Springs Salamander, and its concrete amphitheater construction is credited to Andrew Zilker himself. In building this open-to-the-sky spring run, the City will enhance salamander habitat to improve the long term recovery of the species.

In support of the May 21st celebration of Deep Eddy’s 100-year anniversary, Laurie Limbacher and Alfred Godfrey led a tour focusing on the history of the site dating as far back as the 1850s. Deep Eddy is the site of a spring-fed swimming pool with a long history as an Austin recreation destination. Limbacher & Godfrey Architects’ renovation of its WPA bathhouse was completed in 2007.
At its annual design awards celebration, AIA Austin awarded Limbacher & Godfrey a 2016 Design Award for the Boardwalk on Lady Bird Lake. Four distinguished deliberated among nearly 300 projects.
This week, the Texas Society of Architects announced their 2016 Design Award winners, and the Boardwalk on Lady Bird Lake is among them. Four distinguished jurors spent two days in Austin deliberating among nearly 300 projects. They selected 10 that they felt were the best representations of architecture in the state of Texas.
Juror Clive Wilkinson, FAIA said, “It kind of reinvents the very public idea of a promenade … that you go out, and you walk, and you enjoy a city, and in that sense I think it’s a fabulous example to be followed with urban design going forward.”
Limbacher & Godfrey has completed work on a master plan for exterior spaces at the Long Center for the Performing Arts. While the 10-year-old venue is home to two state-of-the-art performance theaters, its central location offers unprecedented views of Lady Bird Lake and Austin’s skyline, making it a favorite destination for over 100 outdoor events annually. The master plan is to improve the outdoor event experience while also enriching the Center and its park setting. In collaboration with Design Workshop and Lake|Flato Architects.
Laurie Limbacher and Alfred Godfrey led a tour of Deep Eddy for What’s Out There Weekend Austin, a two-day celebration, featuring over two-dozen of the area’s diverse collection of cultural landscapes.
What’s Out There Weekend is a five-year-old program that has been held in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and other cities, and is intended to bring to light the unique landscape legacy and local character of each city. Using expert-led tours, a full-color guidebook and a website with a searchable database, it draws people out into their communities to experience first-hand the culturally-rich landscapes that they see every day but often overlook.
What’s Out There Weekend Austin https://tclf.org/news/features/two-great-days-city-violet-crown was organized by the Cultural Landscapes Foundation in association with the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department and the Austin chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, Preservation Austin and with financial support from the National Endowment of the Arts. Over 800 people registered for the event.

Urban Home Austin-San Antonio magazine features Laurie Limbacher in “FAIA Women of Central Texas”, an article celebrating ten Central Texas women in architecture who have been elevated to AIA Fellow, or FAIA. Fellowship is one of the highest honors the American Institute of Architects can bestow upon a member, and conveys national recognition on the achievements of the individual. In the article, Laurie describes architecture as, “a practical art, with both beauty and function.” (October/November, 2015 issue).
For its role as an advocate for and major contributor to the Boardwalk on Lady Bird Lake, the Trail Foundation won the 2015 Urban Land Institute Austin: Impact Award for Public Places. The award honors the creation of lively gathering spaces that serve as a public destination, and those that exhibit intensive use on a regular basis and act as a magnet for a broad spectrum of users. This award recognizes the Boardwalk as a stunningly beautiful section of the Trail that features spectacular views of downtown, and that has already become a popular destination for joining in Austin’s active, healthy lifestyle. Limbacher & Godfrey Architects was the project’s lead architectural designer.

Focusing on architecture, art and design, each unique guide is illustrated with more than 50 striking colour photographs.
Alfred Godfrey, and two other speakers, gave the Inaugural State of the Trail address at the first annual Trail Foundation State of the Trail breakfast. Held at Austin’s W Hotel, the event was intended to position the Trail Foundation as a community thought leader in matters of urban greenspace initiatives in conservation, design and health. Over 100 major donors and community leaders attended.
